Analysing Ancillary Texts- The Wombats 'This Modern Glitch'

Front of the CD Case:

Key Conventions (Front Cover):
- The name of the band in their recognised font
- The name of the album
- A main picture (which usually shows the artists) and sometimes links to the album title.

How does the design appeal to the target audience:
- It is bright so stands out which would catch peoples attention and make them want to buy the CD.
- The picture is set on a beach which suggests a laid back style which fits in with indie genre and style and therefore the target audience
-The clothes that the models are wearing are very casual which also fits with the indie genre and therefore the target audience.
- The concept of the image is very quirky which makes it different and stands out which would appeal to the target audience and make them want to buy it.

What do the design elements suggest about the...
Artist-
- The bright colours and the beach setting- with picnic- suggests that the artist is laid back and fun which could reflect the album content.
- The font looks like it could have been written in felt-tip pen and the letters are all slightly different sizes in capitals- this suggests that the band are slightly different and that they don't want to look ordinary. The capitals make the name stand out suggesting that the band is a loud and bold.
- By not showing the artists' faces shows that they are confident (as it is their second album) that people will recognise them by their signature style e.g. hair, clothes and stature.
- Also because all the band members are level (the main singer doesn't stand out more than the other members, which sometimes happens on other albums because it makes it easier to sell a face) shows that they work well together and emphasises that they are a band and not just a single person

Genre-
- As I have already mentioned the clothing of the models shows the casual indie style of the band
-And the whole concept of the image shows the quirky, indie style

Messages and themes-
- The concept/ design of the album image links with the name of the album 'This Modern Glitch' as it shows people holding images up to their faces- this portrays that in the modern age people can put up any façade they want to on the internet with no worries about showing their true identities (this may also be why the band have decided to not show their faces as they believe in the message they are trying to convey). By doing this it shows a 'deeper' level to the band which suggests that the lyrics to their songs will be too.

How does this text synergise with the others in the digipak:
.It uses the same theme (holding things over their faces) as the other texts
.It uses the same colour scheme (light blues) as the other texts (excluding the CD)
.The picture of the chez lounge is carried on to the magazine advert- carrying on the quirky original style.

-The image is a different image to the front of the album showing that the artist wants to show as many sides of herself that she can to her fans.

What are the connotations of the design and how do they link to the artist and genre?
-The artist is not trying to get out of the box which shows a passive side of the artist and also the pop genre.
-The use of the stars over the poster shows connotations of fame but also makes the poster look slightly childish showing that her target audience is younger teenagers.

-Same rustic and stylised feel as the images of the digipak.
-Although the image is not the same as the front of the CD case, as many advertising posters are, it is the same as the single album art for a song called 'Push' which is advertised on this poster. -The artist is looking straight into the camera which connects with the audience.
-The pose that the artist is holding suggests a laid back style that fans are used to

Props

These are a rough idea of the types of props I will use in my music video- a have used lots of red items to showcase the title 'Red Hands'!

Locations

There are three main locations that I will use in my music video, the living room of the girls house, fields and a garden-like place that has a willow tree. I wanted to visually show this so I have collected images that show the main feel of locations in my video.

The Narrative Actress- Her Look

These are the ideas I had for the look of the actress that will play the narrative character. I want audiences to feel sorry for her/ her situation which means she needs to be relatable to my target audience, this is why I have given her everyday clothes, natural make-up and just plain/ un-styled hair. This look can be quite boyish so I want her to wear nail varnish and bracelets to give her feminimity which is the focus of most music videos. I want the whole costume to fit into the indie style of the music ad I think I have accomplished it with these ideas!

To tie in with the subtle red theme of the music video she will be wearing red shoes and maybe a red shirt in order to remind the audience of the song, really make them listen to the lyrics and also reiterate the meaning of the video- the guilt is following her (guilt will be represented as the red colour).

The Band- Their Look (Drummer and Guitarist)

Here are the costume ideas I had for the rest of the band, they are toned down a bit from the main singer because she is the one the record company would want fans to focus on more because she would be more pofitable.

With the male guitarist I have gone for the same stle as the main singer -a casual but stylised look-in order to make the band have the own style for people to recognise them by. Again, he will have tattoos to show a rough edge that will appeal to my target audience.

The drummer will be wearing dark eye make-up show her feminimity however I also had the idea of her wearing 'geeky' glasses because this fits in more with the indie style that I want the band to portray. She will be wearing white to really show off the red powder paint that will feature in the video at the end.

The Band-Their Look (Main Vocalist)

This is the costume ideas I had for the main vocalist, I wanted to bring in the subtle red to tie in with the song title so I want her to have red nails and lipstick. As for her clothing I wanted in to be quite casual because this fits in with the indie genre however I've tried to make it quite stylised with dark-eyed make-up and the hair style in order for her to stand out and be considered desirable in the music industry world as this would make the band more profitable.

I have also shown an image of a tattoo that I would like to try to re-create on my actress as I think the presence of a tattoo fits in with the indie style and gives the band a 'rough' style that fits in with the band's music style.
