Analysing Ancillary Texts and Magazine Advert- Olly Murs 'Right Place Right Time'
Front Cover...
Key Conventions:
-Image of the artist
-Name of the artist
-Name of the album
How does the design appeal to the artist's target audience?
-The writing frames the artist, making him stand out, this would appeal to the target audience as they would want to focus on him.
-The artist is looking straight into the camera which connects with the audience.
-The pose that the artist is holding suggests a laid back style that fans are used to
-The artist's clothes are quite vintage and stylised which links to his genre of music which tells the audience that his style of music is the same as his other albums. This would appeal to them as they like his music and therefore do not want it to change.
-The colours featured on the front cover are pale which would appeal to the target audience because they want music that is calming and laid back which is suggested in the pale colours.
What do the elements of the design suggest about the artist, genre, and album contents?
-There are lots of different fonts used on the front cover, this suggests a variety which could be carried onto the songs within the album.
-The artist is looking straight into the camera suggesting that he is strong and confident. Also he is not smiling, just slightly pouting which suggests a sexy side to the artist.
-The main font (in black) looks like it is written in felt-tipped pen which makes it look quite messy. This suggests that the songs in the album and the artist are not polished/ auto tuned showing that what you are getting in the album is the 'real' Olly Murs.
-The font is bold suggesting that the artist has a bold voice and personality which will be reflected in his music and conforms to the nature of the pop genre.
-The font is not straight on the front cover, this suggests that the artist is different and that his music will be different from his competitors which would appeal to his target audience because they expect something different from him.
-The artists clothing, especially the braces, suggests a vintage quality to his music which is a countertype to the pop genre. I believe they have decided to do this because the record company want to bring in a variety of audiences not just typical pop fans.

-The font is, again, to not straight suggesting that the songs with not be 'main-stream' but different and therefore worth listening to.
-The fact that there are two discs is emphasised encouraging the audience to buy because it seems, again, that they are getting their money's worth.

How does the design appeal to the artist's target audience?
